WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – SEC Freshman of the Year and ITA Singles All-American Sam Riffice has been selected to play with Team USA at the 2019 Pan American Games, the USTA announced on Friday.
Riffice is the first freshman to be selected for the team since 1999.
The Games will be played in Lima, Peru and the men's tennis tournament will run from July 29-August 4, featuring men's and women's singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competition.
"It's an honor to be able to represent my country and wear the red, white and blue," Riffice said. "It's always something I've wanted to do."
Riffice posted 26 overall singles wins and a team-high 19 dual wins. He also went 10-0 in SEC singles play and was the first Florida rookie since 2007 to go undefeated in their first conference singles season. The Orlando native earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Singles Championships and, with his upset of Big Ten Player of the Year and No. 2 seed JJ Wolf (Ohio State) in the Sweet 16, he advanced further than any freshman in the country.
He became just the seventh true freshman in program history to earn All-American status and only the fifth in singles.
The Pan American Games are a summer sports competition for countries in North, South and Central America held every four years in the year prior to the Olympic Games. The United States has historically done well at the Pan American games, having won more than twice as many total medals as any other country.
USTA National Coaches Adam Peterson (women) and Eric Nunez (men) will coach the U.S. Pan American Team and includes the following players:
