Former women’s basketball star Funda Nakkasoglu to begin professional career in Turkey.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Former University of Florida women's basketball guard Funda Nakkasoglu will begin her professional career with Galatasaray S.K. of the Turkish Women's Basketball League, as the club announced the signing of the sharpshooter Friday morning.
Nakkasoglu, who led the Gators in scoring in each of her two seasons with Florida, departed the NCAA ranks with 2,047 career points. A lethal long-range shooter, Nakkasoglu averaged 15.8 points per game over 57 games with Gators, finishing with a program-best 39.6 percent shooting mark from three-point range.
After graduating with a degree in economics in 2018, Nakkasoglu spent the 2018-19 campaign working towards a master's degree in management and is expected to graduate this summer.
The 5-foot-8 guard will begin the next step of her basketball journey in the same country her father Can played professionally. Nakkasoglu, who was born and raised in Australia, trained with the Turkish Senior National Team in 2016 and again in 2018 when she participated in a multiphase selection camp.
This past season, Nakkasoglu led the SEC in three-pointers made (84) while shooting an efficient 42 percent from distance. She scored in double figures 24 times and eclipsed the 20 point mark in 12 games.
Nakkasoglu's signing marks the second-straight season that a Gator has agreed to a professional contract as former teammate Paulina Hersler inked a deal with Mann-Filter Zaragoza of Spain in 2018.
After scoring 1,149 points at Utah State over the course of two seasons, Nakkasoglu transferred to UF where she spent her final two years of eligibility.
