LUBBOCK, Texas – Florida women's tennis junior
McCartney Kessler opened the Gators' 2019 fall slate in the win column as she battled back to defeat Boise State's Lillian Poling, 4-6, 7-6 (3), [15-13] Sunday at the W15 Lubbock on the campus of Texas Tech University.
With the victory, Kessler advances to the second round of the qualifying bracket and is set to square off with former Alabama player Andie Daniell Monday morning.
The Calhoun, Ga. native dropped the opening set, but found a second gear as the match progressed and rallied back to knock off Poling, who played at the No. 2 slot for the Broncos a season ago.
With two more wins, Kessler would secure a spot in the event's main draw, joining classmate
Victoria Emma who earned an automatic qualification.
Monday's matchup between Kessler and Daniell ought to be a good one as the two combine for four All-SEC nods (two apiece).
Main draw action begins Wednesday.
