Florida falls to the reigning national champions in three sets

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 7 volleyball team fell top-ranked Stanford in three sets (22-25, 17-25, 19-25) on Wednesday night at Exactech Arena.

Florida fell 25-22 in the first set and dropped the second set 25-17. The Gators then dropped the third set 25-19 to close out the match.

Holly Carlton led the way offensively, registering 10 kills on the evening. Thayer Hall pitched in eight, while Paige Hammons added seven kills on the evening.

Marlie Monserez dished out a team-best 22 assists, while Allie Gregory registered a team-high seven digs.

Rachael Kramer led the way blocking, recording three blocks on the night.

The Gators are back in action on Saturday against eighth-ranked Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. First serve is slated for 8 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network +.

How it Happened
  • The Gators and Cardinal were neck-and-neck throughout the first set, with neither team leading by more than three for the entirety of the frame. With the set tied at 20-20, Stanford put together a 4-1 run to take the 24-21 lead. A Stanford service error put the Gators to within two at 24-22, but the Cardinal took the set after a Florida service error.
    • Florida was held to a .120 clip during the first set, but Holly Carlton recorded four kills with a .500 clip to lead to the way offensively. Paige Hammons added three, while Darrielle King pitched in two.
  • Stanford jumped out to the early 10-3 lead and held the momentum from that point on. Florida put together a run late in the set, thanks to a Holly Carlton kill and two Stanford attack errors, but were unable to complete the comeback and fell 25-17.
    • The Gators were held to a -.056 hitting percentage in the second set. Thayer Hall recorded three kills in the frame, while Holly Carlton added two.
  • The third set was tied 10-10 midway through, but Stanford went on a 10-3 run to break open the 20-13 lead late. Florida got to within five at 23-18, but the Cardinal closed out the frame to win the match.
