An Encouraging Statement from Keyontae Johnson's Family

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The parents of Florida basketball star Keyontae Johnson released a statement Tuesday afternoon that, no doubt, sent a jolt of optimism — if not sheer joy — throughout Gator Nation.
According to Nika and Marrecus Johnson, "Keyontae is in stable condition today, breathing on his own and speaking with us and with his doctors here at UF Health. He even FaceTimed the team! We feel so much love and support from everyone, and we're beyond grateful for the care and attention that Keyontae has received throughout these past several days."
Johnson, the junior and preseason Southeastern Conference player of the year, was airlifted to Gainesville and admitted to UF Health after spending two days at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital following his collapse early in Saturday's game against Florida State. Johnson had been listed in critical but stable condition since Saturday — including with Monday's update about that said he was following simple commands — so the developments of Tuesday were the most encouraging news yet.
Those coupled with the thought of his teammates seeing and speaking to him for the first time since Saturday.
"We will continue to share updates about Keyontae's health and progress," the family said. "We have seen how much people love and care for him. We hope people recognize that information that doesn't come from us or the athletic department may not be accurate. We are working closely with Keyontae's doctors and the UAA to provide information to everyone who cares so deeply about Keyontae and has been praying for him."
