Women's tennis takes on second-straight top 10 foe Tuesday in Ann Arbor.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 24 University of Florida women's tennis team (1-1) resumes dual match play Tuesday, Feb. 4 when it heads north for a matchup at No. 10 Michigan (2-1) at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor. First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET as the Gators and Wolverines square off for the second-straight season.
Florida launched its 2020 dual match slate at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Jan. 25-26, in Raleigh, N.C. where it split a pair of matches against Oklahoma and No. 8 NC State. The Gators advanced to the ITA Kick-Off Championship match with a come-from-behind win against Oklahoma. After dropping the doubles point, Florida's focus was fierce in singles as it notched four victories. Sophomore Marlee Zein sealed the momentous win with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory on court four.
Against the host Wolfpack, Florida's match would begin in a similar fashion but this time it couldn't find the same success in singles play, as it dropped the decision 4-0. For the weekend, Tsveta Dimitrova, Ida Jarlskog, McCartney Kessler and Zein all notched singles wins while Zein and Sydney Berlin produced a doubles victory.
No. 37 Kessler and No. 96 Victoria Emma currently represent UF in the ITA individual rankings.
Michigan features two top 100 players in No. 26 Giulia Pairone and No. 85 Andrea Cerdan.
A season ago, the Gators and Wolverines met on April 11 in what proved to be a pivotal match for Florida. After trailing, 3-1 Florida fought back to claim a 4-3 victory. The win significantly bolstered UF's NCAA Tournament hopes as it ensured it would finish above .500 for the season. Kessler clinched the win with a dramatic three-set victory in which she trailed 5-4 in what would have been the second and decisive set.
The Wolverines played their first road match of the season this past Saturday at No. 2 North Carolina, falling short 4-0. Michigan opened its dual match campaign by hosting its own ITA Kick-Off regional in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines were successful, registering wins over Ole Miss and No. 12 UCF thus punching a ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago later this month.
Florida holds a 5-0 edge over Michigan in a series which began in 1997.
Following Tuesday's tilt, the Gators' next match will come at home as they welcome North Florida Friday, Feb. 14 for their 2020 home opener. First serve is set for 5 p.m. ET.
