Senior All-American Amelia Hundley will still be with the Gators next season as she becomes a student coach.
Amelia Hundley: Staying with Gymnastics
Thursday, March 12, 2020 | Gymnastics
When her collegiate career closes, senior All-American Amelia Hundley moves to the sidelines as a student-coach for the 2021 season.
Gator floor exercise music selections spans many genres. One style is the favorite of a fan who hasn't missed a Gator meet – home or away – over the last four seasons.
Senior Amelia Hundley's floor music, which includes snippets of "We Will Rock You" and "Crazy Train", is enjoyed by many in the Exactech Arena. But it is the fan who Hundley points to while performing her rockin' routine that she dedicates her final season's floor exercise performances.
Inspiring her music choice is the tunes her father, Michael, played in their family home while she was growing up in Hamilton, Ohio.
Hundley is appreciative of the involvement of her parents during her gymnastics career, which began in her family's dance studio at age 2.
Gymnastics has been an important part of Hundley's and her family's life. And once her competitive career ends, Hundley plans to step into a role she's been preparing for throughout her Gator career.
Coach Jenny Rowland and the younger gymnasts look forward to Hundley's continued presence in the gym next season. After an internship at Nike this summer, Hundley returns to Gainesville to transition to student coach while she finishes up dual degrees in Family, Youth and Community Sciences and Education Sciences in the 2020-2021 school year.
Gator Gymnastics forgoes the naming of a team captain and encourages every gymnast to be a leader. Hundley has been able to identify her strengths and embrace the leader within herself.
With so many big personalities on one team, Hundley has found it "really cool to see people's different perspectives and leadership styles and see how that intertwines [so we can] all come together to lead the team."
That is one of the viewpoints Hundley developed during her Florida career. Along with learning to be okay with imperfection and to enjoy every moment, one of the most important lessons that Hundley has learned is to embrace the different perspectives people bring.
Throughout her tenure as a Gator Gymnast, Hundley has identified how to meet people where they are and try to see how their think. She wants to "get through to people [and] help them so that we can work together collectively."
This will benefit her as she pursues her dream job as an assistant coach in collegiate gymnastics. Hundley is willing to go anywhere and everywhere to work her way to the top of the field.
But before that, she will serve alongside Coach Rowland, who's excited to have her as a staff member. "She's going to be a fantastic force for the team and a great benefit to student athletes."
Rowland praises Hundley's consistency in her kind-heartedness and willingness to do anything for her teammates, and her growth in her sport, as she has taken ownership of herself and learned to value what's in front of her.
Those lesson gained throughout her Florida experience will help Hundley in her coaching career – which she hopes someday leads her back to the Gator staff.
