Shelton Makes First Challenger Quarterfinals Appearance

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In his second career Challenger, sophomore Ben Shelton made his first quarterfinals appearance after winning four matches and advancing out of qualifying.
Shelton collected two wins in qualifying to get to the main draw of the Champaign Challenger. His first qualifying victory came over ATP No. 480 player, Govind Nanda, in two sets by a score of 6-4, 6-4. He moved on to the main draw after defeating Hunter Heck, 6-3, 6-3.
Continuing his surge in the main draw, Shelton took on ATP No. 180 player, Blaz Rola. He dropped the first set, 6-3, but would go on to win the next two sets by scores of 6-4.
In the round of 16, Shelton won his fourth match of the Challenger with a three-set victory over ATP No. 317 player Pedja Krstin. Again, Shelton was down 6-4 in the first set, but dominated the next two sets with 6-0, 6-1 scores to advance to the quarterfinals. Shelton served three aces in the final game of the match – upping his total to 12 – to secure his win. Shelton made it to his first quarterfinals of a Challenger, but would fall in a tough match to ATP No. 306 player, Yosuke Watanuki.
At the East Lansing 15K, Andy Andrade advanced out of qualifying with a couple of solid wins over his opponents. In his first match, Andrade took on Josh Mukherjee and posted a straight-set win by scores of 6-2. In the final round of qualifying, Andrade was paired against No. 4-seed, Radu Mihai Papoe. The Gator claimed the match with another straight-set victory, 7-5, 6-3.
The senior went on to win another match in the main draw after beating Max Sheldon in a first-round battle, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2. During the following round, Andrade put up a fight against Kentucky's Gabriel Diallo before dropping the match, 6-7 (7-9), 5-7.
