Vale earns POW while Shelton takes FOW after big weekend wins
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida's Duarte Vale and Ben Shelton earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors after the Gators defeated Georgia and Tennessee over the weekend, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Vale was named SEC Player of the Week while Shelton was named SEC Freshman of the Week.
Vale registered an impressive weekend against the Bulldogs and Volunteers at No. 1 singles with victories over the No. 9 (6-3, 6-2) and No. 24 (4-6, 6-4, 10-5) players in the country.
The senior captain improved to 7-3 in dual matches and 15-3 overall in the 2020-21 season.
Shelton won both of his singles matches at No. 5 and both doubles matches at No. 3 with Andy Andrade over the weekend.
Shelton and Andrade clinched the doubles point in both matches, while the freshman also clinched the dual match victory for the Gators over Tennessee on Sunday after coming back from a dropped first set of his singles match to win the final two sets by scores of 6-1, 6-3.
Shelton moved to 10-1 in dual matches and 17-2 overall in the 2020-21 season.
Florida is scheduled to play at Ole Miss on Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
