ATHENS, Ga. – Taking on its third-straight top 25 opponent, the No. 27 University of Florida women's tennis team (5-5, 3-2) came up short Friday at Georgia (8-1, 4-0), dropping a 4-1 decision to the Bulldogs at the Magill Tennis Complex.
After falling in a competitive doubles segment, the Gators faced an uphill battle and couldn't get over the hump as UGA posted wins on three of the first four singles courts. No. 65 Layne Sleeth was the lone Gator to register a win on the day as the sophomore dispatched No. 50 Marta Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-0 on court five.
Florida, taking on its sixth ranked foe this season, fell to 3-2 in league play after dropping singles matches on courts one, four and six.
The Gators battled in singles against a squad that featured five ranked players and were a few games away from turning the match around, but came up short in two-set contests on all three of the courts that fell.
Hoping to slow down a Georgia unit which entered the matchup winners of six straight, Florida came out with energy in doubles, jumping out to 2-1 leads on courts one and two. Georgia won the first court of the day though with a 6-1 victory on court three. Sydney Berlin and Sleeth, playing together for the second time in three matches, battled but fell short against UGA's Meg Kowalski and Lea Ma. UF quickly evened the doubles tally after No. 26 McCartney Kessler and Marlee Zein won by the same score on court one.
Putting together another excellent performance from the Gators' top spot, the veteran duo defeated Katarina Jokic and Ariana Arseneault, claiming their sixth-straight win.
Florida would need a win on court two to claim the opening point but could not secure it as Ida Jarlskog and Sara Dahlstrom dropped a 6-2 final to No. 37 Morgan Coppoc and Elena Christofi. UF's tandem built an early 2-1 lead and was in the mix during the match's pivotal games, but saw UGA's nationally-ranked pairing pull away.
Florida had entered the match with three doubles point conversions in its first four SEC matches.
In singles, the Bulldogs continued on with the momentum they established with first set victories on four of the six courts. Following some back-and-forth play, the match came to a sudden end with four courts wrapping up in a short period of time.
Court four was the first to go in favor of UGA as Dahlstrom dropped a 6-1, 6-2 final to No. 73 Morgan Coppoc. The sixth court fell soon after as Berlin saw her four-match winning streak come to a close. The left-hander fought back to tie the second set at 2-2, but was edged out 6-2, 6-3 by Elena Christofi. The Bulldogs increased their advantage to 3-0.
Soon after Sleeth put the Gators on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-0 victory, recording her second win over a ranked opponent this year.
The Bulldogs then produced a win on the top court to clinch the match as No. 32 Kessler's four-match winning streak was snapped by No. 16 Katrina Jokic. Kessler could not overcome an early deficit and fell in straight sets to the Georgia junior.
Zein posted a win in her opening set, but saw her matchup against No. 31 Lea Ma go unfinished at 6-3, 1-6, 0-1. Jarlskog's match also went unfinished on court three as the senior's contest ended at 1-6, 6-6 against No. 50 Meg Kowalski.
UP NEXT: The Gators continue their two-match road swing with a Sunday contest at No. 21 Tennessee. First serve is slated for Noon ET from Knoxville.

Overall thoughts on the match…
"We beat ourselves today. Certainly, need to handle winning or losing the doubles point without letting it bleed into our singles play better. A team like Georgia at home will punish you quickly if you don't bring it emotionally. It's clear we are better overall now than when we started the season in January, but today definitely had some lessons for us to handle better on Sunday."
