YOKOHAMA, Japan – More Gators joined in Olympic competition as Gators from the men's and women's swimming and diving programs competed along with more action from softball today.
Men's & Women's Swimming
Finals
Kieran Smith qualifies for his second final of the Olympic games in the 200 Free. Smith finished second in his heat and second overall earning a spot in Monday night's final with a time of 1:45.07. The 200 Free final is scheduled to start at 9:43p.m. ET.
In the 4x100 Free Relay, Caeleb Dressel splits 47.26 on the opening leg to help Team USA to a first place finish with a time of 3:08.97.
Prelims
Coming off of a bronze medal in the 400 Free, Kieran Smith was back in the pool this morning in the 200 Free. Smith finished fourth in heat five and 13th overall with a time of 1:46.20 to advance to the semifinals, Sunday night, at 9:37p.m. ET.
Eric Friese swam the anchor leg for Germany in the 4x100 Free Relay. Friese split 48.95 to help Germany to a 16th place finish.
The USA 4x100 Free Relay team advanced to the finals after a first place finish in the final heat and second overall. Caeleb Dressel will be competing in the 4x100 Free Relay final later tonight at 11:05p.m. ET.
Softball (USA)
The Americans closed out their opening round slate of competition against Japan and won, 2-1, Tuesday night at Yokohama Baseball Stadium.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Kelsey Stewart lifted Team USA to the walk-off victory with a solo home run over the right field wall.
Japan was able to take an early 1-0 lead via an unearned run in the 1st inning of play, but the Red, White & Blue responded in the 6th inning to tie the game on Valerie Arioto's RBI single that scored Haylie McCleney.
Aubree Munro and Michelle Moultrie also each received starts in the effort.
Team USA will compete for a gold medal Tuesday, July 27, at 7 a.m. ET against Japan. With Team USA's win tonight, they will be the home team for the gold medal game.
