TOKYO – Gators resume action Thursday at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, competing in baseball, track & field and golf, The Canada-Sweden gold-medal soccer match moved to a Friday 8 a.m. ET start due to the high temperatures in Tokyo.
Baseball
Mark Kolozsvary and Team USA advanced to the Olympic gold-medal game with a 7-2 victory over Korea in the semifinals on Thursday morning. The United States will now compete for gold in a rematch against Japan on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 6 a.m. ET.
Kolozsvary received the start behind the plate for the fifth time in as many games at Tokyo 2020. Batting seventh in the Team USA order, Kolozsvary went 1-for-3 with one RBI, one walk and one stolen base. Overall, the former Gators backstop is batting .235 (4-for-17) in Olympic play and has caught all 46 innings for the United States in Tokyo.
Regardless of the outcome of Saturday's gold-medal game, Team USA is guaranteed to turn in their best Olympic finish since the 2000 games in Sydney, when the Stars and Stripes brought home their first and only gold. The United States has never earned a silver medal in baseball at the Olympics, but claimed bronze in both 1996 and 2008.
With a medal now clinched at Tokyo 2020, Team USA is set to collect their fourth medal in the last five Olympic baseball competitions.
Track and Field
Representing Bahamas, Doneisha Anderson ran the first leg in the 4x400-meter relays qualifying Thursday morning. The Bahamian team was listed as DNF (did not finish) on the official results. Meanwhile, Team USA finished in first place and qualified to the finals, scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Taylor Manson, who earned a bronze medal with the 4x400-meter relays mixed team, did not compete in the women's 4x400 qualifying round but is part of the relays pool and could compete in the finals. However, Team USA's 4x400-meter relays lineup for Saturday has not been announced.
Golf
In the third round, Marife Torres turned in her best score of 1-under-par (70). She birided back-to-back holes twice - 5 & 6 and 15 & 16 - to total nine throughout the event. Her tee time for the final round is set for 6:59 p.m. ET Friday and Torres will be paired with Tiffany Chan (Hong Kong) and Mariajo Uribe (Columbia).
Soccer
As a result of extreme heat in the area, Adriana Leon and Deanne Rose of Team Canada will now compete in the gold-medal match against Sweden on Friday, Aug. 6 at 8 a.m. ET.
