GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida soccer lost 7-1 to No. 2 North Carolina Thursday at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
The match ended a month of Thursday meetings of top-20 teams for Florida. Only the UF and Ohio State schedules included four matches versus top-25 teams in the opening four weeks of the 2021 season.
Thursday's Scoring:
Lightning delayed the start of Thursday's match for 45 minutes. The opening goal started when Emily Murphy's shot from just above the box deflected off the legs of a Gator defender. UNC's Emily Colton picked up the deflection from just above the penalty spot to score with a left-footed shot in the 10th minute.
An attempt by UF's Taylor Baksay to clear UNC's Aleigh Gambone's cross scored as an own goal in the 13th minute. The Tar Heels pushed the first half lead to 3-0 when Avery Patterson's corner kick curled in to score in the 29th minute.
The Tar Heels opened scoring just over a minute into the second half as Colton put in the deflection off Gambone's shot. In the 52nd minute, Libby Moore's cross to the far post was headed in by Emily Murphy.
In the 66th minute, UNC's Rachel Jones picked up Paige Tolentino's corner kick. Jones took a couple of touches before sending a 22-yard shot to the far upper corner.
Just 25 seconds later, Florida's Sydney Urban sent a ball ahead looking for Alivia Gonzalez making a run down the left side. The clearance attempt by UNC's Makenna Dominguez scored as the UNC goalkeeper was off her line.
The final goal came when UNC's Rachael Dorwart put in Rachel Jones' centering cross at 80:37.
What Tony Amato Said:
On tonight's match:
"North Carolina is really good with a lot of good players. I thought we had some moments with some really strong individual effort. Players grinding, players blocking, players picking up runners, players winning first balls but ultimately thought there were a few goals North Carolina created and few goals we could clean up and prevent. We have to do a better job in those situations and we have no choice but to get better at that in the week ahead.
"We had some individual moments that were positive. Some of those were one player at a time sprinting hard blocking a forward pass or one player challenging at a time for a header. If we can have everyone on the field collectively doing those sort of things, we can get better results as we start our conference schedule.
"We are going to have to look at all those things and make sure that is what we do. Winning at this level is hard and we know it is going to take that sort of work, mentality and attitude to get results when we start conference play next week." - Florida Head Coach Tony Amato
