GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida softball team defeated UNF 12-1 Sunday afternoon in a 10-innning exhibition at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. UF's next exhibition against the College of Central Florida has moved to Sunday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. due to weather concerns forecasted for the originally scheduled date.
UF produced 14 hits and drew 11 walks, while the pitching staff only allowed five hits and two walks. 10 Gators earned hits in the contest with Sarah Longley (2-for-2), Katie Kistler (2-for-4), Sam Roe (2-for-4) and Skylar Wallace (2-for-5) each producing multi-hit performances.
In the circle, Rylee Trlicek, Elizabeth Hightower, Samantha Bender and Olivia Gigante each saw action with Trlicek and Hightower consuming most of the innings. Trlicek picked up the start in the first five-inning exhibition and went 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and no walks allowed, while only giving up three hits. Hightower started the second five-inning set and threw four innings with four strikeouts and only one walk.
The Gators struck for five runs in the second inning of action to open up the scoring. Reagan Walsh started the rally with a leadoff double down the right field line and the Orange & Blue loaded the bases shortly after, which allowed Roe to drive in Walsh and Kistler on her two-RBI base hit up the middle. Wallace followed up with another two-RBI shot on a laser hit to second base that scored Roe and Avery Goelz and eventually scored herself later in the frame on an Osprey error.
The Orange & Blue tacked on an additional run in the third inning of the first half of the exhibition. Walsh once again started the rally with a leadoff walk, which was then followed up by a single to left from Kistler, a single to right by Roe and a bases loaded RBI hit by pitch drawn by Wallace to push the lead out to 6-0.
In the second five-inning portion of the exhibition, the Gators scored in every inning except the third to take the win 6-1. In the first frame of action, Wallace nearly lifted the ball over the right field wall but it was caught for a SAC fly that scored Falby from third.
Florida followed up in the second with two more runs to push the lead out to 3-0 thanks to a pair of bases loaded RBI walks from Falby and Echols. The lead was extended to 5-0 in the fourth inning thanks to Olivia Gigante's two-RBI single that scored Longley and Falby who reached with a single and walk respectively.
UNF scratched across a run in the final frame of action after a leadoff single and a pair of wild pitches put an Osprey at third with no outs. The runner scored via an RBI groundout on the infield to close the lead to 5-1. However, the Gators earned the run back in their last at-bat to secure the win 6-1 when Longley plated Kinsey Goelz on a laser double in the right center field gap.
