BATON ROUGE, La. – Florida women's tennis opened Southeastern Conference play in convincing fashion, defeating LSU on the road, 6-1, on Friday evening in Baton Rouge.
With the victory, the Orange & Blue have now won their 12th-consecutive SEC-opener and in the history of the program, the Gators have claimed victory in all but three conference openers.
The Gators (8-2, 1-0 SEC) began the match with an immediate advantage, as the Tigers (1-5, 0-1 SEC) only fielded two doubles squads, giving the visitors a leg-up in the competition. Florida clinched the doubles point without much problem, as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association No. 12 duo of Alicia Dudeney and Bente Spee took down Nina Geissler and Mia Rabinowitz at the two position, 7-5.
In singles competition, LSU forfeited the fifth and sixth positions, giving UF a 3-0 match lead to begin. Needing just one more point to clinch the match, No. 49 McCartney Kessler put away Safiya Carrington at one singles: 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the match.
No. 47 Marlee Zein pushed the lead to 5-0 for the Gators almost immediately after Kessler's victory, earning a sweep over LSU's Taylor Bridges: 6-1, 6-2. Emma Shelton earned the Gators' sixth and final point of the night, downing Mia Rabinowitz at the four singles slot: 6-3, 7-5.
