Florida Continues Postseason with NCAA East Prelims
Monday, May 23, 2022 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Track and Field team will be aiming to punch some tickets to Eugene this weekend when it heads to Bloomington, Ind. for the NCAA East Prelims.
The NCAA Preliminary Round serves as the qualifying meet to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
In both the East and West regions, each of the top 48 athletes in every individual event (excluding the multis) will compete for the right to go to Oregon.
24 relay teams will also contest races in the 4x100 and 4x400 in each region.
The Top-12 athletes and relays in each region will make up a field of 24 in every event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Because the Heptathlon and Decathlon are not contested at the preliminary level, Anna Hall (No. 1 NCAA) and Sterling Lester (No. 12 NCAA) have qualified directly to next month's competition.
Men:
Florida will be chalk full of sprinters when it heads to Bloomington this week.
Of the three sprint events (100m, 200m and 400m), the Gators will have 12 entries including five alone in the 400 meters.
Joseph Fahnbulleh and Tyler Davis are set to contest the 100 meters and 200 meters while also playing a big role on the NCAA-leading 4x100 relay team.
Dedrick Vanover and PJ Austin will make up the other half of the 4x100 team and are entered into the 100 meters as well. Kemuel Santana will run the 200 meters.
The quarter-mile group has been outstanding for Florida this year. The Gators put three into the finals of the SEC Outdoor Championships and scored 20 points from this group.
Champion Allison, Jacory Patterson and Ryan Willie are all within the Top-8 in the NCAA this season in the event.
Jacob Miley and Anthony Brodie will also join Florida's contingent in the 400 meters.
Sam Austin was a Second Team All-American during the indoor season in the 800 meters and is set to contest the same event this weekend.
Caleb Foster will double in the 110-meter hurdles and Long Jump. He will be joined in the Long Jump by SEC Bronze Medalist Malcolm Clemons.
Jonathan Miller will take to the runway in the Triple Jump and is joined by Michael Holloway II, who will make his NCAA Prelim-debut in the event.
Collin Sieffert will run the 400-meter hurdles after running a personal best of 51.08 at the SEC Outdoor Championships.
Mark Porter (Javelin) and Edward Shelikoff (Discus) make up Florida's contingent in the throws this weekend.
The Gators also bring the top-ranked 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams into Bloomington. Florida swept the pair of relays at the SEC Outdoor Championships and will look to punch their tickets to Eugene on Friday evening.
Action for the men will take place Wednesday (May 25) and Friday (May 27).
Women:
The No. 2-ranked Florida Women's Track and Field added another trophy to its collection this past week when it captured the SEC Outdoor Championship.
Florida will take 23 entries to Bloomington with a number of heavy hitters expected to book their spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The Gators will have the top two seeds in both the Long Jump (Jasmine Moore and Claire Bryant) and the Triple Jump (Jasmine Moore and Natricia Hooper).
Alissa Braxton will also make up the field in the Triple Jump while Bryant doubles in the High Jump as well.
Talitha Diggs headlines a long list of entries in the 400 meters. She will be joined by Taylor Manson, Sterling Lester, Cait Tate and Doneisha Anderson.
Between the men and women, the Gators have 10 entries in the 400 meters.
Anna Hall will attempt to qualify through to Eugene in the 400-meter hurdles as well. She and Vanessa Watson make up a talented tandem with big scoring opportunity in June.
Hall will also join Lester and Sasha Wells in the field for the 100-meter hurdles.
Imogen Barrett and Gabrielle Wilkinson are coming off a pair of podium finishes at the SEC Outdoor Championships and will headline a talented field in the 800 meters.
Vasileia Spyrou will make her return to the NCAA East Prelims to contest the 1500 meters.
Parker Valby will debut in the NCAA East Prelims when she runs the 5000 meters on Saturday night. She won a silver medal and earned huge team points during Florida's run to the SEC Outdoor Championship.
Pamela O'Brien will run in the 3000-meter steeplechase, meaning Florida will have representation in nearly every distance event.
Florida will close out the weekend with its 4x400 relay team. The team of Manson, Lester, Anderson and Diggs contested the event for the Gators at the SEC Outdoor Championships.
Action for the women will be on Thursday (May 26) and Saturday (May 28).
