COLUMBUS, Ga. – Florida softball players Charla Echols, Amanda Lorenz, Michelle Moultrie and UF Head Coach Tim Walton helped lead the U.S. Women's National Team to a pair of exhibition wins over world-ranked No. 8 Australia, 7-1, and No. 2 Japan, 3-0, Monday at the South Commons Softball Complex.
The group of Gators are preparing for the 2022 World Games that will compete for the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Cup in Birmingham, Ala. from July 9 -13, at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
In the exhibition against Australia, Lorenz and Moultrie both went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored each. The duo also was also able to give Walton, who serves as an assistant coach with the Eagles, a familiar fist bump rounding third in the exhibition.
The first opportunity came in the first inning as Lorenz belted a solo shot to center field to give the Red, White and Blue a 1-0 lead, while Moultrie followed up with a solo home run of her own to right field in the second inning to extend that lead out to 3-0. In addition, Echols drew two walks and scored run in the effort.
Team USA closed out its Fourth of July doubleheader with a rematch against rival 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medal winners Japan. Lorenz and Echols were instrumental in putting the Eagles out in front early, 1-0, as Lorenz moved former Alabama standout Haylie McCleney to third base with a double in the first inning and Echols drove McCleney home via a sacrifice fly to left field. Echols finished the game 1-for-2 as she picked up a single in the third inning of action.
Lorenz extended the lead out to 2-0 over Japan in the fifth inning with her second home run of the day. The Moorpark, Calif. native finished the exhibition 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and overall was 5-for-6 through both exhibitions.
Team USA tacked on an additional run in the sixth via a home run in the sixth inning from former Oregon standout Gwen Svekis.
The Red, White and Blue now heads to Oxford, Ala. with three more exhibitions scheduled with Australia, Japan and the USSSA Pride at Choccolocco Park. A double header against Australia and Japan is set to take place today at 6 p.m. ET and a solo game against the Pride tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. ET.
