GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Former Florida baseball standout Sterlin Thompson was recently honored on the 2023 All-Arizona Fall League Team as an outfielder.
Ranked as the Colorado Rockies' No. 6 prospect in the organization, Thompson finished with the seventh-highest batting average in the AFL while slashing .338/.460/.475 across 80 at bats. In 21 games with the Salt Lake Stallions, Thompson totaled 27 hits, two triples, seven doubles, 15 runs, 13 RBI and seven stolen bases. He also ranked 11th in the league with a gaudy .935 OPS.
The All-AFL accolade represented one of many for Thompson this past fall. In early November, Thompson was selected as a 2023 AFL Fall Star as one of the top mid-season performers in the league. At the conclusion of the campaign, the second baseman/outfielder was listed as a top-25 prospect in the 2023 AFL, coming in at No. 20 overall.
Holding status as the second-highest Gators outfielder to be drafted (behind Wyatt Langford), Thompson was taken by Colorado with the 31st overall pick in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He has worked his way up the Minor League ladder since then, reaching Double-A in 2023 and hitting a combined .293/.376/.487 across two levels. The left-handed hitter also smacked 14 long balls and 25 doubles in 2023 to follow up a 2022 campaign that saw him slash .307/.351/.436 while splitting time in Rookie ball and Single-A.
During his two years in Orange & Blue, Thompson hit a combined .332/.424/.524 with 145 hits, 16 home runs, five triples, 26 doubles, 98 runs, 78 RBI and 12 stolen bases. He suited up in 121 career games for the Gators including 117 starts.
The Ocala, Fla. native enjoyed a career year in 2022, batting an unearthly .354/.443/.563 with 90 hits, 11 home runs, two triples, 16 doubles, 59 runs, 51 RBI and 10 stolen bases. After hitting five homers as a freshman in 2021, Thompson more than doubled his home run output as a sophomore while connecting for 29 extra-base hits. On top of setting a career high in home runs, the versatile outfielder/infielder also notched personal bests in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging, hits, doubles, runs, RBI, walks, sacrifice flies (six) and steals while leading the Gators in doubles and stolen bases.
