Parker Valby Shatters 10,000 Meter Collegiate Record
Friday, April 12, 2024 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Parker Valby continues to rewrite history. In a year where the Tampa, Florida native has already won three NCAA Individual Championships, set the NCAA record in the 5,000 meters twice and has been named the USTFCCCA Women's Athlete of the Year for both Cross Country and Track & Field, Valby continued to add to her resume on Thursday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Competing in the 10,000m, Valby shattered yet another NCAA record as she crossed the finish line in 30:50.43. The previous record, which was held by Lisa Uhl (31:18.07), had stood for 14 years before Valby's performance on Thursday. In other words, Valby surpassed the previous record by an outstanding 28 seconds.
Valby joins an elite group of women as she became the 13th woman in American history to have broken 31 minutes in the 10,000m. Her time ranks No. 11 on the American all-time list and is No. 5 in the world in 2024.
As customary with setting a collegiate record, Valby placed first in the event, finishing two minutes faster than the second-place finisher, now holds the UF school record in the event, topping the mark of 32:24.70 set by Rebecca Lowe in 2009, and is No. 1 in the NCAA in 2024.
THORNER SETS SCHOOL RECORD, WILSON JOINS THE 10K TOP 10
Elise Thorner also notched an outstanding performance in Thursday's action as she broke a 12-year-old school record in the 3000m steeplechase. The previous record, held by Gator Great Genevieve LaCaze, was 9:37.90. Thorner shaved nine seconds off that time with a finish of 9:28.49. Her time also stands as the No. 1 mark in the NCAA in 2024.
Allison Wilson also added her name to the UF All-Time Top 10 list. With a 33:34.95 finish in the 10,000m, Wilson becomes the fifth-fastest woman in school history in the event. Wilson also snatched a personal record in the process as she surpassed her previous best time of 35:22.19 set at the 2021 SEC Outdoor Championships.
