Soccer – Canada 2, France 1
Canada stunned host France with a late goal in stoppage time to take a 2-1 win at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne, France.
France took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Marie-Antoinette Katoto found enough space to slot the ball in from 15 yards in the 43rd minute.
Gator grad Adriana Leon entered the match at halftime.
Canada tied the match in the 57th minute. Leon crashed the box to try to get a foot on Ashley Lawrence's cross. France's goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin came off her line to try to make the stop but her deflection was put in by Jessie Fleming. Peyraud-Magnin suffered a head injury on the play and was replaced by Constance Picaud.
Due to the injury, more than 13 minutes of stoppage time was added. Canada scored the go-ahead goal in the 11th minute of stoppage. Jordyn Huitema took a shot at the top of the box off a cross from Leon. Picaud made the initial save but the rebound rolled to the feet of Vanessa Gilles, who scored on a left-footed shot that hit the near post and kicked in to give Canada the final margin.
Saturday, Canada was stripped of six points in Olympic soccer action by FIFA as a result of the drone-spying scandal. Head coach Bev Priestman along with assistants Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander were sent home and are banned from all soccer for one year.
The six points deduction makes Canada's defense of its 2020 gold medal extremely difficult. Canada's six points earned in its two Olympic wins (both 2-1 victories versus New Zealand and France) are erased by the FIFA decision. Canada looks for a win in its final match of group play on Wednesday versus Colombia for any chance of advancing to Olympic quarterfinal play. Colombia is 1-1 in 2024 Olympic play.
