Three Gators Tabbed BA Top-100 Transfers
Tuesday, August 27, 2024 | Baseball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Baseball America recently unveiled its annual list of top-100 transfers from the past offseason, featuring Florida outfielder/infielder Blake Cyr, infielder Bobby Boser and right-handed pitcher Billy Barlow.
Transferring to UF from Miami, Cyr headlined the list at No. 10. Boser followed at No. 48 following a three-year career at USF while Barlow capped off the rankings at No. 96 after three years with Clemson. The Gators represented one of 16 programs with at least three players to make the cut.
As a 2023 Freshman All-American with the Hurricanes, Cyr played in just 25 games due to injury last season and batted .284/.397/.537 with seven homers. That was a far cry from his freshman campaign when he slashed .305/.427/.620 backed by 17 home runs, 12 doubles and 63 RBI while suiting up for 60 games. Even so, Cyr is coming off a robust .934 OPS in 2023 while improving significantly as a fielder, finishing with a .964 defensive clip in year two at Miami. Having seen action at second base and the outfield in Coral Gables, Cyr will fill an important void in left field for the Orange & Blue.
Coming in at No. 48, Boser arrives with the most-polished body of work of any UF newcomer. In three seasons at USF, the utilityman delivered a .286/.386/.580 batting line and ranks eighth in program history with 31 home runs. En route to being named 2024 All-AAC First Team for the second-straight year, Boser hit .299/.351/.667 and led the Bulls with 12 home runs despite missing nearly a third of the season due to a hamate injury. He was also named the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week on March 12 and became the first USF player to hit for the cycle since 2004 on March 6 at Jacksonville. Boser figures to slot into the middle of the UF lineup as a regular in the corner infield.
Although he missed most of the 2023 campaign with an injury, Barlow served as a team captain and fired 48 1/3 innings as the Tigers advanced to NCAA Super Regionals in 2024. The right-hander worked to a 6-1 record and 4.28 ERA while fanning 42 batters. All told, the North Myrtle Beach, S.C. native pitched 109 1/3 career frames across 35 appearances (26 starts) at Clemson, compiling a 4.69 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 8.4 strikeouts per nine and 3.7 walks per nine. The experienced hurler will provide much-needed depth to the 2025 pitching staff while competing for high-leverage opportunities on the weekend.
What They're Saying About the Gators
10. Blake Cyr, Miami
New school: Florida
Cyr entered the portal after an up-and-down 2024 in which he dealt with his fair share of injuries. While he played just 25 games and likely wasn't 100% for most—if not all—of them, Cyr was still a rather productive hitter and had 10 extra-base hits and 21 RBIs. However, as a freshman, he lit the world on fire and posted a .305/.427/.620 slash line with 12 doubles, 17 home runs and 63 RBIs. Cyr plays with an infectious energy and swagger, has a tantalizing toolset—especially offensively—packed into his 5-foot-11 frame and will be a high-impact player next spring for the Gators.
48. Bobby Boser, South Florida
New school: Florida
It was a bit of a surprise to see Boser go undrafted, but he's a high-quality addition for the Gators. Following another strong season at South Florida, Boser had an excellent 21-game stint this summer on the Cape in which he hit .319/.443/.486 with eight extra-base hits. Boser has an exciting set of tools and no matter where he ends up for the 2025 season, he figures to be an impact player for Florida.
96. Billy Barlow, Clemson
New school: Florida
Barlow heads to Florida looking to build off the momentum he built this year after posting a career-low 4.28 ERA in 48.1 innings. His fastball sits comfortably in the low-90s and has been up to 96, but his best offering is a mid-80s changeup that this season generated a 38% miss rate. With Florida returning most of its weekend rotation firepower, expect most of Barlow's workload to come in relief or as the Gators' midweek starter.
