Gators Win 2-1 Over FGCU

GAINESVILLE, Fla.  –  September Gator soccer action started Thursday with a 2-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium.

Both Gator goal scorers – freshman Sophia Sindelar and graduate Charlotte McClure – hit their second goals of the season.

Through the opening six matches of the season, Florida's 14 goals so far surpasses the total number of goals scored in 2024 (13) and four wins equals UF's 2024 total.

This Evening's Scoring:
The only goal of the opening half started when Addy Hess found Megan Hinnenkamp along the touchline just above the Eagles box. She took a couple of touches to move just outside the box before sending a centering pass that Sophia Sindelar one-touched in with her right foot.

"All the credit to Megan. She did what she always does so well," Sindelar said. "She drove to end line and then looked up. We kind of made a little eye contact, and I was making a run in, and she played me a perfect ball. So we've been working on a lot in practice, just like staying over and running through it. So that's exactly what I did, and I just wanted to keep it low and on frame. So happy it found the back of the net."

Both teams scored from distance in the 61st minute. Florida's Charlotte McClure drove across the midfield before hitting a 24-yard ball that scored at the upper near post.

"Honestly, I didn't really think, but sometimes that's when I do my best," McClure said. "I saw the ball, I think I took a touch out of the air and just shot it. I remember looking at it in slow motion, going in, and then kind of just felt surreal."

The Eagles scored at 60:57 when Lily Borders touched the ball out to Kate Friday above the Gators box. Friday's left-footed strike from 24-yards scored at the far post upper slot.

DYK:
Charlotte McClure scored her first Gator goal to open the scoring at Maryland and hit the game-winning goal tonight versus FGCU. She is the second Gator this season to score her first two collegiate goals in consecutive matches (Njeri Butts: vs Towson (8/21/25 and vs North Florida 8/24/25) and third on team (Megan Hinnenkamp: two vs Stetson 8/27/23 and at Kennesaw State 9/3/23).

Eight Gators scored 13 goals during the course of the 2024 season. Already through six matches of 2025, nine Gators scored 14 goals. That is the most UF goals through six matches since Florida scored 23 in 2016.

Of the nine 2025 Gator goal scorers, eight hit their first collegiate goals.  Lena Bailey is the only one of Florida's nine 2025 scorers who came into the season with goals in 2023 (4) and 2024 (2).

Coach Bohon Said:
On tonight's result:
"I think this is a real sign of growth. Obviously, we all want to play well, but for us to figure out a way to get a result when we weren't playing well, and again, credit to FGCU. I thought they played very well, but we expected that as they are a good team. Jim [Blankenship] and their staff always prepare them well, so we're just happy to get a result tonight." - – Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon

Nine different Gators have scored this season. How important is to have multiple players able to score?
"We're unpredictable in terms of, who do you mark? So, if you're focusing on one player, somebody else pops up. Just the diversity of our attacking is really, really important. We've never had that since we've been here. So that's really good." – Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon
