Biography

Cardozo, who is in his senior season as a Gator, returns with three years of experience in the starting rotation. His most impressive outing was an eight strikeout, 9.0 inning performance against Baylor in last year's NCAA Regional. Cardozo pitched through injuries last year and nursed a sore shoulder through the summer and fall but is expected to be ready to throw when the 2001 season begins.

2000: SEC Academic Honor Roll selection...Named team's best scholar-athlete at awards banquet...Emerged as Gators' No. 2 starter...Made 17 appearances with 10 starts and two complete games...Posted a 6-2 record with a 4.03 ERA over 73.2 innings pitched...Opposing hitters batted only .257 on season...struck out 62 batters in 73.2 IP...Pitched complete 9.0 inning game, struck out eight and allowed one run and seven hits in NCAA Regional victory vs. Baylor (5/27)...Pitched seven innings (allowed six runs) in no decision against Mississippi State (5/6)...Earned fourth win by pitching five shutout innings against Kentucky (4/8)...Earned third win with five-hit, complete game against Vanderbilt (4/2)...Allowed just two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts in first complete game for the UF staff since March 19, 1999...Threw five innings without a run and only three hits to earn first win against UMass (3/3)...Pitched three innings at No. 1 FSU (2/27), allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts...Battled a sore shoulder all season.

SUMMER BASEBALL: Played for the champion Cotuit Kettleers in the Cape Cod League in 1999...Played for the Harrisonburg (Va.) Turks in the Valley League in 1998 and posted a 2-1 record with a 3.04 ERA in 23.1 innings... Played for the Eastern Tides in the New England Collegiate League in 1997 and finished 4-2 with 2.97 ERA in 10 games with eight starts...Eight starts ranked as the third-best total in the league...Two complete games with one shutout over 60.2 innings, the fifth-best total in the league, with 34 strikeouts and 15 walks...Gave up just one home run while opponents hit .230.

PREP: A 1996 graduate of South Fork High School where he was a three-time letterwinner for coach Charles Anderson...As a senior in 1996 compiled a 7-3 record with a 1.03 ERA and 78 K...First-team all-conference and all-area selection, as well as garnering Team MVP Honors...Made the all-tournament team at the National High School Baseball Festival in 1996...Also lettered in football for South Fork...Graduated with honors, while also being active in student government and sports editor of his high school paper.
