No. 8 Gators Repeat as SEC Champions

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 8 University of Florida soccer team successfully defended its Southeastern Conference Tournament title Sunday with a 4-2 win over Eastern Division No. 1 Vanderbilt in front of a SEC Tournament record crowd of 2,520 at the Percy Beard Stadium.
Melissa Pini, who was one of four Gators named to the All-SEC Tournament Team, gave the Gators the early edge with a 20-yard blast from Angie Olson at the 15:38 point of the first half. With less than a minute to go in the half, Vanderbilt's Laura Koerner evened the score at one apiece with an assist from Kris Braunston.
Vanderbilt came out strong in the second half with a goal from Katie Piefer early in the second half. Tournament MVP Sarah Yohe responded with her fourth goal of the tournament to tie the score at 2-2.
Erin Baxter scored the game-winning goal at the 77:08 point of the second half off a free kick by Kerri Doran to put the Gators up 3-2. With less than five minutes remaining, Adrianne Moreira scored her third collegiate goal to seal the Gators' win with a double assist from Melissa Pini and Katie Tullis.
Baxter, Yohe and Renee Reynolds were also named to the All-SEC Tournament team.
Florida (19-2-1) extended its winning streak to 16-straight matches and awaits NCAA Tournament selection on Tuesday, Nov. 11. The Gators are guaranteed a spot in the NCAA field as the winner of the SEC Tournament.
