Gator Invitational Day 1
1999 Gator Tennis Invitational - Day 1
Friday, October 29, 1999 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida men's tennis team won four of seven singles matches and two of three doubles matches during the first day of action at the 1999 Gator Invitational played at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
The Gators squared off against the University of South Florida on Friday afternoon in a format similar to a dual match, however only individual results are official during the fall season. If this had been a dual match, UF would have sneaked past the Bulls 4-3.
In the morning session, Auburn and Miami split eight singles matches, while the Tigers won two of the three doubles contests.
Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m., with Florida facing members from Miami, followed at 2 p.m. with the Auburn Tigers meeting the South Florida Bulls.
Among UF's singles winners included freshman Matt Behrmann, who looked impressive in his home debut defeating Eric Gildhorn 6-3, 6-2 in Flight 5 action.
"I've been extremely happy with everything I've seen from Matt," UF coach Ian Duvenhage said. "He's a fighter and I think he's going to have a great career here."
Junior Jeff Morrison, the defending NCAA Singles Champion, played his first college match of the season and posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Fabio Tintori in Flight 2 competition.
Junior Will Brown won his Flight 7 match against Evan Pinther, rallying for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory after falling behind 4-1 in the second set.
Senior Dylan Mann topped Boris Babic 6-4, 6-4 in Flight 3 to conclude UF's singles wins.
"I was pleased with about half of what we did today," Duvenhage said. "The other half did not please me at all. I expect more from our upperclassmen, particularly from our seniors Justin O'Neal and Trey Adcock, and they did not even remotely come close to what we need."
O'Neal lost 6-4, 7-5 at Flight 1 to Stephen Capriati, while Adcock dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision to Aleks Popovic in Flight 4. Junior Marcos Asse also lost his singles match today, falling in Flight 6 to Abhijit Shaf 6-2, 6-3.
