Gator Invitational Day 2
1999 Gator Tennis Invitational - Day 2
Saturday, October 30, 1999 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Florida men's tennis team won four of seven singles matches but just one of three doubles matches during the second day of action at the 1999 Gator Invitational. The three-day tournament features a dual match format, but only individual results will count. If Saturday's competition had been scored like a dual match, the Gators would have lost to Miami 4-3.
In the afternoon match, Auburn won five of eight singles matches against South Florida, after winning two of the doubles matches.
"The purpose of this tournament is to find out who we can count on during the dual match season and I think things are becoming clearer for us," UF coach Ian Duvenhage said. "I thought our overall showing was very similar to yesterday's, in that was pleased with half of what we did, but not very pleased with the other half."
Sunday is the final day of tournament played at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. Beginning at 9 a.m., players from Florida will face Auburn, while Miami takes on South Florida simultaneously.
Singles winner for Florida included Jeff Morrison, who defeated Peter Hoffman 6-1, 6-2 in Flight 1, Justin O'Neal, who topped Jamin Thompson 6-2, 6-2 in Flight 2, Dylan Mann, who downed Arpad Odry 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in Flight 3, and Marcos Asse, who posted a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Joel Berman in Flight 7.
"It was good to see that O'Neal turn his game around after a poor showing yesterday," Duvenhage said. "Dylan has won two three-set matches against tough opponents."
"The one thing that did disappoint me was losing the final set of two matches 6-0," Duvenhage said. "We should be tougher than that down the stretch. Also, with the exception of our Flight 1 team, our doubles play today was not good at all and that is just unacceptable."
