ITA South Regionals - Day 3
W-Tennis Wins; Remainder of Play Cancelled (Rain)
Monday, November 6, 2000 | Women's Tennis
Florida's Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach) and Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) in addition to the doubles team of Whitney Laiho (Newport, RI) and Lehnhoff were able to squeeze in and win one round of play at the ITA South Regional Tennis Championships, which was hampered throughout the day by severe rain. The final day of the event held at the Mobile Tennis Center has been cancelled.
Lehnhoff and Dawaf won their respective quarterfinal singles matches and will play each other in the semifinal in Gainesville on a date to be determined. The winner of that will be declared co-champion and receive one of the South Region's automatic bid into the Rolex Indoor Championships, considered the third leg of the collegiate grand slam.
Lehnhoff defeated FAU's Kristen Jordan 6-2, 6-2, while Dawaf topped UAB's Mirela Vladulescu 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
In doubles action, the top-seeded team of Laiho and Lehnhoff defeated South Alabama's Marcela Kotesovcova and Silvia Sosnarova 8-1 in the semifinals. Unfortunately for the Gators, the no. 2-seed of Stephanie Hazlett (Evansville, IN) and Julia Scaringe (Marietta, GA) lost their semifinal bout in a thrilling 9-8 (7-5) decision to South Alabama's Martina Ondrelkova and Viktoria Stoklasova, who were declared co-champions with Laiho and Lehnhoff. A decision will be made as to which doubles team will received the region's one automatic bid into February's Rolex Indoor Championships.
The consolation doubles semifinal match involving UF's Annika Bengtsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Dawaf was cancelled.
This was the final event on the Gator's Fall schedule. The team returns to competition next at the Adidas Tournament on January 26, 2001 in Orlando.
