TAMPA, Fla. – The fourth-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team (4-0) downed the University of South Florida (2-7), 5-2 Thursday afternoon at the USF Tennis Complex. Florida has now won the last 14 meetings between the schools and leads the all-time series, 36-2. UF and South Florida have played at least once every season since 1977.
"The effort was good," said head coach Ian Duvenhage. "It was very hot and the heat got to us a little bit. We did not play great overall, but we played well in doubles."
Florida swept all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. In singles, junior Jeff Morrison, who is ranked fifth in the latest WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings, downed USF's Fabio Tintori, who is rated tied for 101st, 6-2, 6-1 at number one to give UF a 2-0 lead. The Bulls cut the lead to 2-1 as Boris Babic knocked off Gator junior Nathan Overholser at number three singles. Freshman Troy Hahn then downed Aleks Popovic 6-4, 6-1 at number five, giving the Gators a 3-1 advantage. Senior Justin O'Neal, who is ranked 12th, posted a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Stephen Capriati at number two to earn his first clinching win of the season. Freshman Matt Behrmann captured his 10th win of the year as he battled to a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Jit Shah at number six singles.
Florida returns to action this Thursday, February 24 when it travels to the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Louisville. Florida faces sixth-ranked SMU in the opening round on Thursday night.
