COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The fourth-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team (8-2) fell to 18th-ranked Texas A&M (3-3) Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center, snapping its three-match winning streak in a 5-2 loss.
"It was a pretty bad performance all the way around," said Gator head coach Ian Duvenhage. "It was the third match in a row that we lost the doubles point, and singles was not much better."
Florida lost the doubles point despite using some new combinations. The Aggies' 12th-ranked team of Dumitru Caradima and Shuon Madden downed senior Dylan Mann and junior Jeff Morrison at number one and seniors Marcos Asse and Justin O'Neal lost at number three to give Texas A&M the opening point. UF's team of sophomore Olivier Levant and junior Nathan Overholser did post a victory at number two, 8-6.
The Aggies extended the lead to 2-0 with a win at number four singles, but O'Neal, who is ranked 16th in the latest WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings, cut the lead in half with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Caradima at number two. The win improved O'Neal's dual mark to 7-1 and was the 99th singles win of his Gator career. Texas A&M struck next as Morrison, who is ranked seventh, lost a battle of Top 10 players, falling to eighth-ranked Madden 6-2, 7-5 at number one. The loss was Morrison's first in 10 dual matches this season and snapped an eight-match winning streak overall. Overholser cut the Aggie lead to 3-2, knocking off Keith From at number three, 6-2, 6-4 for his third straight win. But the comeback would fall short as Mann lost at number five singles to give Texas A&M the victory.
Florida returns home this Tuesday, March 7 to face Wake Forest at 5:00 p.m. at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
