GATORS MEN'S TENNIS BEATS DUKE, 4-2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Sophomore Olivier Levant defeated Duke's Joel Spicher, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in No. 4 singles action to clinch an exciting 4-2 victory for the second-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team (17-2) over fifth-ranked Duke (13-5) on Sunday afternoon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
The Gators have now won 14 straight matches at Ring Tennis Complex dating back to last season.
After losing the doubles point, the Gators rallied to win four of five singles matches to clinch the victory. Fifth-ranked junior Jeff Morrison defeated 50th-ranked Doug Root of Duke, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 1. Eleventh-ranked senior Justin O'Neal of Florida downed 21st-ranked Ramsey Smith, 6-2, 7-6 and 7-4 in the tiebreaker at No. 2. Junior Nathan Overholser defeated 60th -ranked Andres Pedroso, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. The No. 5 match between senior Dylan Mann and Duke's Porter Jones was suspended after the match was clinched.
In doubles, Morrison and Overholser, ranked 17th in the nation, defeated Duke's eighth-ranked Root and Smith, 8-3 at No. 1. The team of Levant and O'Neal dropped an 8-5 decision to Pedroso and Rueger at No. 2. Junior Marcos Asse and Mann fell to Duke's Jones and Michael Yani, 9-8 (7-1) in the pivotal tiebreaker to give Duke the doubles point.
"I thought it would be a tough match either way," said UF head coach Ian Duvenhage. "I felt strongly we could beat them even though we lost the doubles point. It was a war."
The Gators return to action when they travel to Alabama to face the Crimson Tide on Friday evening. Play begins at 2:00 p.m.
