For the second time in three matches, the fifth-ranked Florida men's tennis team shutout its opponent with a 7-0 victory over 21st-ranked South Florida on Thursday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex. With the win, the Gators begin the season with a 3-0 record for the seventh consecutive year.
"I thought we had a big home court advantage today, and to our credit we were able to get ahead early" said UF head coach Andy Jackson. "USF will be a Top 25 team at the end of the year even in the worst case situation. Obviously, I was thrilled to beat a team on the level they play by a score of 7-0. The match was much more competitive than the first two we played this season, although the score may not have shown it. "
The Gators picked up the doubles point when 13th-ranked Matt Behrmann and Troy Hahn battled from a 3-0 deficit to overcome USF's Uli Kiend and Sebastian Niedermayer, 8-6. The No. 3 match gave UF the point as 37th-ranked Olivier Levant and Eleazar Magallan defeated Jorge Escallon and Nadim Naser, 8-4. Senior Chris McDonald made his return to the courts after undergoing back surgery last summer as he joined sophomore Hamid Mirzadeh with the two playing at the top doubles position. The duo was defeated by USF's Paco Antelo and Reanto Silveira, 8-6.
In the single matches Troy Hahn and Eleazar Magallan picked up quick wins to put the Gators up 3-0. Hahn defeated Nadim Naser, 6-2, 6-1, while 78th-ranked Magallan defeated Juan Barragan, 6-2, 6-2. Sixty-eighth ranked Olivier Levant clinched the match at the No. 4 position with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Reanto Silveira. Freshman Janne Holmia's (ranked 29th) win at No. 2 was also of note as he knocked off 53rd-ranked Paco Antelo, 7-5, 6-1. Only the No. 6 match between UF's Matt Behrmann (ranked 116th) and USF's Federico Barton went into three sets. Behrmann preserved the shutout with his 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 decision.
Florida will make its first road trip of the season on Saturday, Feb. 1 as it travels to Champaign, IL to square off against the second-ranked Illini. Matches are set to begin at 7 p.m. ET
