Three of the four Gators participating in the ITA Riviera All-American Pre-Qualifying Tournament won their respective opening round singles matches, while UF's one double entrant also was successful.
Nina Suvak, Lolita Frangulyan and Alex Liles were victorious in the first round of the 128-player draw played at UCLA. The three-day pre-qualifying event ends with eight quarterfinalists advancing into the qualifying draw that begins Oct. 5 at the Riviera Tennis Club. The eight quarterfinalists from that event earn the right to complete in the 32-play main draw of the 2004 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, one of the three national singles and doubles championships played on the collegiate circuit.
Suvak defeated Cal Poly's Carol Erickson 6-2, 6-2 in Saturday's first round, while Frangulyan topped TCU's Kiwa Nichols 6-2, 6-4 and Liles downed Washington's Allison Rainey 6-4, 6-0.
UF freshman Whitney Benik dropped her opening round match 6-1, 6-2 to Wisconsin's Caitlin Burke. She will continue play in the consolation draw on Sunday.
In the 64-team pre-qualifying doubles event, Benik teamed with Frangulyan for a solid 8-4 pro-set win over Southern California's pair of Anastasiu and Sauer.
Sunday's schedule features two rounds of singles and one round of doubles.
