UF Men's Tennis Continues Success At ITA All-American

For the second straight day each of the four University of Florida men's tennis team members in singles action picked up wins as qualifying action at the 2004 Icy Hot/Men's All-American Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn., continued on Tuesday. In addition, UF's Janne Holmia and Greg Ouellette advanced in the doubles draw as well.
In singles play, Ouellette defeated Ole Miss' Eric Claesson in the round of 64 (6-1, 6-4). With the victory, the UF freshman remained perfect on the fall with a 10-0 record. Ouellette will meet UT-Arlington's Alexander Farquharson on Wednesday morning in the round of 32. Classmate Nestor Briceno also moved on with his 7-6 (2), 6-3 win over Duke's Peter Rodrigues. Briceno will take on Virginia's Somdev De Varman in tomorrow's round of 32 play. Sophomore Martin Stiegwardt won his sixth straight at the event after playing his way through the prequalifying rounds. On Tuesday, Stiegwardt posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Oklahoma's Ondrej Fukala to set up a match against Winthrop's Clayton Almeida on Wednesday. With the win, Stiegwardt improved his fall record to 14-1. Junior Chris Brandi rounded out the list of UF winners with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Illinois' Monte Tucker. Brandi will next face Georgia's Colin Purcell tomorrow.
In doubles action, Holmia and Ouellette earned their way into the round of 16 with an 8-3 win over
San Diego State's Armando Carrascosa and Daniel Jung. The UF pair faces Tennessee's Ockie
Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers tomorrow.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships include 192-singles player and 96-doubles team prequalifying tournaments played October 1-3 which fed into 128-player and 64-doubles team qualifying tournaments October 4-6. The 64-player, 32-doubles team main draw takes place Oct. 7-10. The singles tournament fields can run over 350 players, making it the largest collegiate event of the season.
The Icy Hot/ ITA Men's All-American Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May. All told, 46 of the top 50 players in the preseason ITA singles rankings are competing in this year's main draw.
