Reyes & Doubles Duo Advances at Riviera WTennis All-American

The University of Florida's Zerene Reyes upset top-seeded and 27th-ranked Courtney Bergman of Harvard 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the third round of the Qualifying draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Women's Tennis Championships. The victory advances the Gator senior, ranked 47th, into the main draw of the national event that begins Thursday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
"Zerene just grinds out victories and she did that again today against Bergman," UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. "She won in three hours, instead of the three and a half hour match she won Tuesday. She just finds a way to never give up."
Joining Reyes in the main draw featuring 32 of the nation's top players is Gator teammate Jennifer Magley, who received an automatic bid into the tournament because of her No. 12 ranking. Magley and Reyes also pair in the 16-team doubles field.
Just missing a trip into the singles main draw was UF junior Boglarka Berecz, who dropped a tough 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 third round contest to UNLV's Elena Gantcheva.
"Boglarka had opportunities during the match, but just didn't capitalize," Balogh said.
The freshmen doubles team of Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan also earned a spot in the main draw, stunning the top-seeded and 13th-ranked pair of Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette of Stanford 8-2 in the third and final round.
"Whitney and Lolita played absolutely flawless doubles," Balogh said. "The were focused on staying aggressive at the net and it paid off. It was good for the those two freshmen to get that experience and a win against such a veteran team."
Benik and Frangulyan defeated California's 41st-ranked team of Suzanna Babos and Sasha Podkolzina, 8-1, earlier in the day.
Berecz and Nina Suvak, UF's other doubles team competing in the Qualifying draw, won their second round match 9-7 over Washington's No. 2-seeded and 14th-ranked pair of Dinka Hadzic and Dea Sumantri, but lost in the final round 8-4 to Clemson's 21st-ranked Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito.
