Shell Dailey to Join UF Women's Basketball Coaching Staff

University of Florida women's basketball coach Carolyn Peck announced today that Shell Dailey will join the Gator staff as an assistant coach, filling the vacancy created when Charlene Thomas-Swinson departed to become the head coach at the University of Tulsa. Dailey's official duties at UF begin on June 27.
"Shell has great experience having been a head coach on different levels," Peck said. "She was an assistant coach in the SEC in addition to coaching in the WNBA. Shell has a dynamic personality and is going to be a tremendous addition to our staff. Her experience and her personality, which is magnetic, will be an asset to our current and future players."
"I'm really excited about being part of the University of Florida staff," Dailey said. "An opportunity like this doesn't come around too often and I am fortunate that Coach Peck wanted me to be a part of it. The University of Florida is an excellent institution and one of the top athletic departments in the country."
"Recruiting is something that I consider to be one of my strengths," Dailey added. "Defense and post play is something I take pride in and I think I can compliment that staff with those skills."
Dailey has been coaching women's basketball since the 1992-93 season and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Florida program. Most recently, Dailey served as an assistant coach with the WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars, twice being named interim coach during her two-year tenure during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
Prior to her stint in the WNBA, Dailey spent four years as an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina, where her stay was highlighted by a pair of NCAA appearances, including an NCAA Elite 8 trip in 2002 and a second place finish in the SEC. Dailey assisted Gamecocks head coach Susan Walvius with recruiting, coaching the post players, scouting opponents and helped coordinate the team's marketing strategies. USC's 2003 recruiting class was ranked as the nation's seventh-best by adidas All-Star Girls Report.
Dailey received her first coaching experience on the professional level during the 1998-99 season, when she was an assistant coach with the Nashville Noise of the now-defunct ABL. Dailey spent one year as an assistant coach at Texas A&M University, after serving as head coach at Texas Christian University from 1993-96. She began her coaching career at TCU during the 1992-93 season, becoming the first full-time assistant coach in Lady Frog history, one year before being named the program's head coach for the next three years.
A native of McKinney, Texas, Dailey earned a B.S. degree in advertising management in 1986 from the University of Texas. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Lady Longhorns from 1981-1985, helping the program reach the NCAA Elite 8 in 1983 and 1984 and win four conference championships.
Dailey attended McKinney High School where she was a standout basketball player, earning second-team all-state recognition.
The former Shell Bollin married Eric Dailey on August 10, 2002. The couple has one child, Eric Lavell Dailey Jr., born January 15, 2004.
