University of Florida senior opposite hitter Amber McCray (Longview, Texas) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Wednesday.
McCray, who owns a 4.00 grade-point average in the Sport Management Master's Program at Florida after graduating in May 2007 with a bachelor's degree in journalism, is the sixth player in UF history to bring home Academic All-America honors, and the first since Lauren Moscovic collected second-team accolades in 2003. To be eligible for Academic All-America recognition, a player must earn a spot on the All-Academic first team in her respective district.
A three-time Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll performer, McCray was awarded the Tracy Caulkins Award, given annually to UF's top graduating female athlete, in 2007. Her first-team Academic All-District III selection this season ran her career total to three, adding on to a third-team honor in 2005 and a second-team nod a year ago.
She recently garnered first-team All-SEC honors for the second-straight year after averaging 3.20 kills per game on .362 hitting during league play, and her overall season average of 3.14 kills per game ranks second on the team. McCray needs 19 kills to become just the 16th player in school history to record 1,000 in her career, while also teaming up with fellow seniors Marcie Hampton (Gainesville, Fla.) and Kisya Killingsworth (Deltona, Fla.) to give the Gators a trio of 1,000-kill players on the same roster for the first time in school history.
McCray's Academic All-America selection adds to a haul of postseason awards that also features a place on the SEC Community Service Team.
