University of Florida men's tennis senior Nestor Briceno earned a straight set victory, while teammate Greg Ouellette was defeated in the opening round of the NCAA singles draw Wednesday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Briceno, who is appearing in the NCAA singles draw for the first time in his career, edged Texas' 10th-ranked Dimitar Kutrovsky, 6-4, 7-6 (4). With the win, he advanced to the Round of 32 where he will square off against Pepperdine's 37th-ranked Bassam Beidas on Thursday. Briceno's win was his third over an opponent ranked inside the top 10 this season and sixth straight victory dating back to the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament.
Ouellette, who entered as the No. 2 seed in the draw, lost in straight sets to Southern California's 29th-ranked Kaes Van't Hof (6-4, 6-2). Ouellette ended his singles career with a record of 110-37. His 110 wins ranked as the fourth highest total in school history. He also has won 71 doubles matches and his 181 combined wins were the fifth highest by any Gator all-time.
Florida boasts a pair of NCAA singles champions and one NCAA doubles championship team in its history. Mark Merklein won the 1994 singles championship, while Jeff Morrison did so in 1999. The duo of Merklein and David Blair won the doubles title in 1993.
