UF's Cueto Receives Second M-Tennis SEC Freshman of the Week Honor
Monday, April 20, 2009 | Men's Tennis
University of Florida's Carlos Cueto (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) was named SEC Freshman of the Week following his performance in both singles and doubles in No. 10 Florida's 7-0 sweep over No. 29 University of South Carolina on Saturday. The honor marks Cueto's second Freshman of the Week nod this season.
Ranked No. 22 in singles, Cueto has played on court one the entire dual match season. He rapped up the regular season with a victory over No. 55 Diego Cubas, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6). The victory was Cueto's 12th against a ranked opponent this season. The freshman has claimed three consecutive matches against ranked opponents.
Cueto has also made a name for himself in doubles play. Along with partner Alex Lacroix (Paris, France), the pair has won 21 consecutive matches since losing their first as a team on January 16. Currently posting a 21-1 doubles record, the duo already finds themselves among Florida's all-time leaders for single-season doubles wins. With the postseason on the horizon, the pair is likely to enter at least the top-five on that impressive list. Lacroix and Cueto earned their final regular-season doubles win with an 8-6 victory over Veeder/Pulsfort of South Carolina. Lacroix was recognized as the SEC Player of the Week earlier in the season.
The fourth-seeded Gators earned a first-round bye in this weekend's SEC Championship. Florida will take on the winner of 12th-seeded Vanderbilt and 5th-seeded Alabama on Friday at 11 a.m. CT. The Orange and Blue have defeated both squads this season. Live scoring is available at www.GatorZone.com.
