Florida Volleyball Notebook: Oct. 12, 2010
Wednesday, October 13, 2010 | Volleyball
One of the main keys to the success of the No. 1 University of Florida volleyball team this season has been its prowess in the serving game. The Gators rank first in the Southeastern Conference and 17th in the nation in service aces with 1.80 per set. Over its past five matches combined, the Gators have averaged 2.19 service aces per set with 35 total service aces during that span.
In all matches combined, Florida has an impressive four players ranked among the SEC's top-10 in service aces. Junior right-side/setter Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) ranks third in the SEC with 0.36 aces per set, while senior outside hitter Callie Rivers (Winter Park, Fla.) is fourth in the league with 0.35 service aces per set. Junior outside hitter Kristy Jaeckel (Littleton, Colo.) is eighth in the SEC with 0.27 aces per set, while senior libero Erin Fleming (Orlando, Fla.) is 10th in the league in service aces.
In SEC matches only, Murphy leads the SEC with 0.50 service aces per set, while senior middle blocker Lauren Bledsoe (Long Beach, Calif.), Jaeckel and Rivers each average 0.33 aces per set in league play alone.
A pair of Gators – Bledsoe and Murphy – have recently charted career days from beyond the service line, as Bledsoe had a career-high four aces this past Sunday against Mississippi State, while Murphy charted the second-most aces in program history with eight against Arkansas on Oct. 3.
