Wednesday, March 31, 2010 | Men's Tennis
Florida freshman Bob Van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for men's tennis, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Van Overbeek posted wins in singles and doubles in the Gators' 4-3 road win over Ole Miss on Sunday, helping extend UF's winning streak to eight matches.
He and doubles partner Daniel Cash (Oslo, Norway) got Florida rolling with an 8-6 win over the Rebels' Adrian Forberg Skogeng and Harry Fowler at the No. 3 position, and the Gators went on to clinch the point, which would prove critical.
Van Overbeek then posted the fastest singles victory of the day, downing Chris Thiemann in straight sets at No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-3, to give Florida a 2-0 lead and set the stage for a tightly-contested Florida win.
The Boca Raton native has now won seven consecutive singles matches, including a 5-0 SEC record, and eight of his past 10 doubles contests.
The Gator rookie has now earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors three times this spring, also garnering the accolade on Feb. 24 and March 3. Fellow freshman Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) also earned that recognition on Feb. 17, giving UF a total of four SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season.
The Gators will be on the road this upcoming weekend, facing Vanderbilt on Friday at 4 p.m. Eastern and 10th-ranked Kentucky on Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.
