Current and former Gators will be a common sight in New York over the coming weeks as the U.S. Open gets underway.
Three are competing in the singles qualifying draw, while former Gator Ryan Sweeting will compete in the main singles draw, which begins August 30. Rising sophomore Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) takes part in the doubles main draw beginning next week.
Rising sophomore Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) earned a wild card into the U.S. Open qualifying draw after being a finalist at the USTA Boys 18s Tennis National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., earlier this month. van Overbeek fell in the first round of qualifying to Croatia's Nikola Mektic, 6-4, 6-0.
In addition, former Gator Greg Ouellette also made it into the qualifying stages, but came up short in a three-set match to Ricardo Hocevar of Brazil, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-1.
Jesse Levine, a 2007 All-American at UF, begins qualifying on Wednesday with a match against Brazil's Caio Zampieri.
