University of Florida sophomore Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla.) rebounded from a fifth-round loss in the Boys 18 Singles draw at the USTA Boys National Tennis Championships to win the feed-in singles draw with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Alexios Halebian.
Last week, No. 8 seed Halebian defeated No. 14 seed Newman in the fifth round of the main draw in three sets [7-6 (2), 1-6, 6-2], but the second time around Newman got the best of Halebian, downing him in straight sets to take home the tournament win.
"The Gators are proud of Spencer to win the Kalamazoo backdraw and finish top 5 at the Junior National Championships,” said Florida head coach Andy Jackson. “He has been working hard and staying healthy and this will make for a very bright future for him. I hope that he will get a chance at the U.S. Open in 3 weeks."
In the same event last year, Florida's Bob Van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) was the runner-up in the main singles draw, earning a spot in the qualifying for the 2010 US Open main draw. In addition, Gator Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) won the feed-in singles draw and partnered with Nathan Pasha to claim the main doubles draw title, earning a spot in the main doubles draw at the 2010 U.S. Open.
