Saturday, September 10, 2011 | Women's Golf
The No. 16 ranked Florida Gators take the course for the first time in the 2011-12 campaign Sunday at the Cougar Classic presented by Piggly Wiggy. The tournament is hosted by the College of Charleston and is held at the Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, S.C. The Gators will look to build upon the best finish under head coach Jan Dowling.
“We finished strong down the stretch last season,” Dowling explained. “Hopefully we can learn from that and play that well beginning with the first tournament of the year.”
The Cougar Classic is a three-day event that will take place from Sunday, Sept. 11 until Tuesday, Sept. 13. Practice rounds will be played on Saturday Sept. 12 and there will be 18-holes played each day with tee times on Sunday and Monday and a shotgun start on Tuesday. Play will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday and Monday and at 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday and will continue throughout the day.
“It's a great tournament to start off the year,” Dowling said. “The course is exactly what you look for early in the season and you can't find a better field of opponents.”
The Gators will compete against 21 other schools, including six SEC opponents. The entire tournament field is as follows: Alabama, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, Duke, Florida, Furman, Georgia, LSU, Maryland, Miami (FL), Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Penn State, Richmond, South Carolina, Tennessee, UNCG, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.
Florida will open of the season with junior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines), at the front of the lineup, followed by junior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.), senior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.), freshman Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) and rounded out by senior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.). The Cougar Classic will mark the first time assistant coach Emily Bastel dons the Orange and Blue.
