TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida men's and women's cross country teams saw their younger runners fare quite well at the Florida State Invitational on Friday (Oct. 2) morning.
On the men's side, redshirt junior Mark Mutz, one of four upperclassmen who ran for the Orange and Blue in Tallahassee, Fla., led a group of five runners that cracked the individual top 15. Those Gators totaled 56 points, which was good enough for runner-up honors in the team competition.
Mutz (sixth) and recorded the first top-10 finish of his collegiate career, while senior Elliot Clemente (eighth) collected his third career top-10 finish. The rest of Florida's top-15 contingent was comprised of redshirt freshman Mac Macoy (13th) and true freshmen Jack Rogers (14th) and Connor Vaughan (15th).
While the women settled for eighth place as a team, four Gators clocked personal-best times. Freshman Emily Chapman's 5,000-meter personal record of 19:10.60 made her the team's top finisher, taking 20th place among Division I competitors.
NUMBERS OF NOTE
· This is the fourth runner-up finish in as many trips to the Florida State Invitational since 2002 for Florida's men
· The Gators also had two runners place inside the top 10, something they have accomplished each of the four years they've trekked to the Florida State Invitational since 2002
· Mark Mutz's sixth-place finish marked the fifth-highest finish by a Gator at this event since 2002
