LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 20 University of Florida men's tennis team made a valiant effort on the singles courts in their attempt to upset the No. 8 USC Trojans on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell to their opponent, 4-3.
The Orange and Blue gave it their all on Saturday at the Pac-12/SEC Challenge in Los Angeles. After dropping the doubles point for the first time this season and two quick singles losses, the Gators found themselves down 3-0 in the match. Senior captain Diego Hidalgo put the Gators on the board with a straight set victory over No. 115-ranked Max de Vroome, 6-4, 6-3. Fellow-captain Elliott Orkin followed suit with a win over No. 41 Nick Crystal, 6-3, 6-4.
The final two singles matches each went to tie-breaks. In his first singles match of the season, Gordon Watson was able to get the straight set win over Jake Jaede, 7-6, 7-5 to pull the Gators even with the Trojans. The match came down to freshman Alfredo Perez and Jake DeVine on the No.3 line. DeVine took the first set by way of a tie break, 7-6(6). The second set was knotted at 5-5 all, but the Trojan pulled away to take the match for USC, 7-6(6), 7-5.
UF continues play at the LA Tennis Center tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET against the No. 12 UCLA Bruins in the final match of the Pac-12/SEC Challenge.
What Coach Perelman Said…
"The Gators lost a tough match today against a good USC team. It always stings when you lose a close match, but we saw our guys do a lot of positive things today. We believe in this team and we are looking forward to putting it all on the line again tomorrow against UCLA."
