Kaylan Marckese is SEC Defender of Week & Julia Lester is SEC Freshman of the Week
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After Florida's 1-0 win at Missouri last night, two Gators picked up a pair of the final weekly Southeastern Conference honors of the 2016 season, the league office announced this afternoon. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese is the SEC Defender of the Week while Julia Lester is the SEC Freshman Player of the Week.
This is the first such honor for Lester and second SEC Defender of the Week honor for Marckese in 2016.
South Carolina's Savannah McCaskill is the SEC Offensive Player of the Week.
About the Gators Honored this Season:
Lester is the fourth Gator to pick up weekly SEC honors in 2016. SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors went to Savannah Jordan twice and also to Melanie Monteagudo. Kaylan Marckese was the Week 2 SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Marckese in Goal Thursday:
In Florida's 1-0 win at Missouri Thursday, Marckese helped the Gators turn in their seventh shutout of the season – and sixth of the last eight matches.
Among her four saves Thursday was a hard shot from a MU player just above the six-yard box in the 19th minute.
It was the 12th solo shutout of the Gator sophomore's career. Her seven shutouts in 2016 ties for fifth on Florida's season record chart. She has played in goal every minute of the 2016 season for Florida.
Lester's Performance Yesterday:
The only goal of Florida's 1-0 win at Missouri came off the Gators' final corner kick of the opening half. Gabby Seiler's kick went to near post where senior Pamela Begic headed it across the goal. Missouri's clearance attempt went to just above the box where Lester stepped up for her opportunity. Her right-footed half volley scored from 20-yards in the upper slot of the near post.
It was Lester's second goal of the season, with both coming in road action. Her first goal came at LSU when she hit a strike from the top of the box in the 89th minute.
Lester owns two goals and two assists this season.
Next up for the Gators:
Florida finished tied for third in the 2016 SEC regular-season standings and will be the No. 4 seed at the SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala. The final match of Wednesday's four-match tournament schedule is a rematch of Thursday's contest – Florida versus Missouri. That match airs live on the SEC Network at 8:30 p.m. ET.
