Florida Raised Its Winning Streak to 10 Games.
Highlights from Game 1
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After a tight game through five innings, No. 1 Florida exploded for seven runs in the sixth and seventh in a 9-2 win over Harvard in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at McKethan Stadium. The Gators (16-1) extended their winning streak to 10 games and clinched the weekend series with the Crimson (2-4).
Freshman Nelson Maldonado (1-for-4) and junior Peter Alonso (3-for-4) each hit a three-run homer to lead the Gator offense. It was Maldonado's first career home run and Alonso's second of the season.
Junior left-hander A.J. Puk allowed just one hit in 5.1 innings but left with the game tied in the sixth. Freshman right-hander Brady Singer (2-0) entered and pitched 2.2 innings for the win, as Florida scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
After four scoreless innings, Florida manufactured a run in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Jonathan India led off with a double into left field, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Nick Horvath (2-for-3) and scored on sophomore Dalton Guthrie's sacrifice fly to center.
Harvard answered in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of a one-out walk by junior Josh Ellis. Ellis advanced to second on a passed ball then came around to score – barely beating sophomore right fielder Jeremy Vasquez's throw to the plate – on a single to right by sophomore Matt Rothenberg (2-for-3).
In the bottom half of the inning, sophomore JJ Schwarz (2-for-4) led things off with a double and Alonso followed with a single. Vasquez (2-for-3) hit a ground-rule double to right field and scored Schwarz from second to take a 2-1 lead. Maldonado then connected on a 1-2 pitch and sent a line drive to the seats in left field to open up a 5-1 Florida advantage.
Alonso's home run came an inning later and scored Guthrie and freshman Deacon Liput for an 8-1 lead.
The two teams each scored a run in the eighth for the final margin. Freshman Michael Byrne pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Florida to finish the game.
