Florida Relay Earns Honorable Mention All-American Honors

Gators finish 16th in the 800-Yard Freestyle Relay

ATLANTA -- The University of Florida women's swimming and diving teams opened up the 2016 NCAA Championships tonight, swimming to a 16th-place finish in the 800-Yard Freestyle Relay. It was the only event swam tonight, which puts UF in 16th-place with two points after Day One competition.
The quartet of sophomore Amelia Maughan and seniors Natalie Hinds, Jessica Thielmann, and Ashlee Linn posted a time of 7:04.79, which gathers with it an honorable mention All-American status.
Maughan opened the Gator Relay, clocking a time of 1:47.46 in her leadoff split. At the exchange, Hinds pushed the Gators ahead with a time of 1:45.05. Florida was in seventh-place at the midway point.
Thielmann swam the third leg of the event and clocked a time of 1:46.72 before Linn anchored in fourth, touching the wall at the 7:04.79 mark. Linn's split of 1:45.06 was the second fastest on the relay and helped push the Gators into a fifth-place finish among the heat.

"We put in a lot of work leading up to this race and we didn't finish where we would have liked to," said Troy. "We thought we could have gone faster. We showed up and swam to the best of our abilities but it just wasn't there today."
Gator All-Americans
In NCAA swimming and diving, athletes and relay teams who make the championship final (top eight) are considered First-Team All-Americans. Athletes and relay teams that qualify for the consolation final (determines places 9-16) are considered Honorable Mention All-Americans.
With tonight's Top-16 finish, the Gator relay has earned an honorable mention All-American status.
