GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Alfredo Perez of the No. 16 University of Florida men's tennis team was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Perez helped the Florida Gators to two 6-1 wins over Top-25 opponents last weekend at the Ring Tennis Complex. The Havana, Cuba native earned two singles victories over the weekend at the No. 3 position. The Gator freshman is 5-0 in singles play and has extended his winning singles winning streak to eight matches in the 2016 season. Perez is now 26-6 in the orange and blue, including 9-1 in dual match play.
After dropping the first set 6-3 to Arkansas's Santiago Munoz on Friday night, the UF freshman fought back to take the second set, 7-5 only to cruise in the third set, 6-3 to get the victory. On Sunday afternoon, Perez was dominate in his match against Ole Miss's Fabian Fallert that ended, 6-3, 6-1 in favor of the Gator.
In doubles, Perez and sophomore Chase Perez-Blanco defeated Ole Miss's Hansson and Lindmark on Sunday afternoon to help the Gators secure the doubles point. The No. 3 pairing are a perfect 3-0 in SEC doubles play and 4-1 in the 2016 season.
UF will be on the road this weekend at Mississippi State and Alabama for Friday-Sunday contests. The Gators are riding a three-match winning streak going into the Magnolia State contest on Friday night in Starkville.
