No. 2 Gators Improve in Round 2 of Southern Highlands Collegiate
Tuesday, March 8, 2016 | Men's Golf
LAS VEGAS - University of Florida freshman golfer Sam Horsfield wrapped up Tuesday's play at the Southern Highlands Collegiate with a two-round total of -5 (139) to remain in contention for the individual title. As a team, No. 2 Florida improved nine strokes from Round 1 to move up into a tie for third.
The Gators were one of only three schools among the stacked 15-team field to record under-par rounds. They shot -2 (286) in the second round to equal Texas' total of 5 (581) and finish two strokes shy of runner-up Arizona State. Southern California fired an 8-under 280 at the Southern Highlands Golf Club Tuesday to take command of a seven-shot lead.
Once again, Florida was led by Horsfield, who carded a 2-under 70 to finish one shot back of co-leaders Sean Crocker (Southern California) and Jon Rahm (Arizona State). Horsfield and fellow freshman Jorge Garcia both eagled the par-5 third hole. It was Garcia's second of the tournament after acing No. 8 yesterday, making him the only competitor with two eagles. Garcia went on to wrap up the day with an even-par 72, tying him for 17th at 1 (145).
Sophomore Alejandro Tosti was able to come back and help the team with a round of 1-under 71, while junior Ryan Orr contributed a 1-over 73.
The Gators will attempt to take advantage of their final opportunity to move up the leaderboard when they return to the Southern Highlands Golf Club on Wednesday for Round 3. The squad will begin teeing off at 8:50 a.m. P.T.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On Round 2:
"It was a great day. In life, sometimes you run into adversity, and my dad always taught me that you have two ways to go with it. You can take it as a negative or you can turn it into a positive. I'm so proud of the guys turning our adversity yesterday into a positive today. They came out really motivated, really focused and had a great warmup. All five of them gave it their all today, and four of them turned in really good scores, so we got ourselves back in the mix."
On Wednesday's final round:
"The course is still, the greens are really firm and the conditions are tough, so we're going to have to be very patient, but I'm looking for us to play our best round of the year tomorrow. I really think that we're on a great track, and it's a wonderful opportunity for us tomorrow against such great teams on such a great golf course. I really think this is what we've been working for, and tomorrow's going to be an unbelievable day."
On Sam Horsfield's consistency this season:
"I like to call him our ace. He's a rock in the lineup. He brings it every day, and courses like this feed right into his hands because he's so smart and has every facet of the game to play great golf on hard courses. He's leading us this week, and I expect him to be right in the hunt for the individual championship tomorrow. I'm really, really excited for him. To see his growth this year has been outstanding."
